Zodiac Signs as Candlefish Fragrances
So, I feel like I should introduce myself before we launch into this ~very formal and well-written~ blog post. My name is McKenzie and among being a chandler at Candlefish, I am an opera singer who has studied astrology and tarot for about 3 years now. I know. I’m really cool.
When I was asked to assign each zodiac sign with a scent from the library, I was stoked to say the least and dove right in. What follows is some further explanation of why these particular scents were chosen for each of the signs. Now, I know most of you only know your Sun sign (aka the one everyone knows), and there’s no shame in that at all! But, when you’re born, there are tons of planets and constellations in all different positions that can tell you about yourself in astrological terms. This wealth of information is called your birth chart. And it’s unique to you! Pretty cool. All this to say, if you feel like you don’t identify with your sun sign, you should calculate your birth chart and look at your moon and ascendant/rising signs. Some people identify with those signs more. Alright, let’s dig in!
I chose No. 48 because the sign of Aries is the first of the zodiac, so I knew it had to be something strong. Aries season (March 21- April 19) used to signify the beginning of spring to ancient societies (our first day of spring fell on March 19th this year), so the notes of black currant in No. 48 seemed like the perfect scent to embody the delicacy of spring, with the ripening of berries and blooming of flowers, and the boldness of Aries, the cardinal fire sign. Aries has a reputation for having a short fuse, but that’s only due to their passionate nature. They are natural born leaders, as are most of the other cardinal signs. The tobacco in No. 48 cuts through the other notes as one of the more defining of the fragrance. That, to me, symbolizes Aries’ nature of being strong, yet impulsive. Aries is also the sign I deem “Most likely to cry when mad.” Basically if you mix in equal ingredients of “Fight Me,” “I’m baby,” and “Anything you can do, I can do better,” you’ve got an Aries. And No. 48.
Taurus was probably the easiest choice out of all the signs. (I’m a libra, so you can all imagine how long this took me…) In every meme about Taurus, there’s always mentions of 1.) constantly sleeping 2.) constantly snacking or 3.) constantly wanting to stay at home (quarantine really is paradise for a taurus--minus being poor and not having money for snacks). It’s all fun and games, but what you notice is the word “constantly” is used (forgive me)..... Constantly. Taurus is one of the most loyal of the zodiac signs, and in my work of scent exploration, I learned that people who love gardenia fragrances are super loyal friends and just all around amazing people. No. 8 was a no-brainer for this loveable Earth sign! With notes of gardenia and magnolia, it really transports you to a slow, southern day complete with warm breezes and sweet tea. If that ain’t Taurus, then butter my back and call me a biscuit.
Sorry, No. 8 makes me feel really southern?
Gemini, Gemini, Gemini…. Where to begin? I knew I had to pick something super fun and outgoing. Gemini’s are the twins of the zodiac, so they’re talking for two! I picked No. 12 because it just smells like a summer beach party to me, and that local beach boy you always dreamed of having that summer tryst with? Yeah, he’s a Gemini. For sure. Lychee: he’s exotic, he’s not from your hometown, he’s tan! Grapefruit: he’s got a bright smile, a personality that lights up the room. Mango: he’s something you don’t have often, but when you want it, it’s all you can think of. Geminis just be like that sometimes. In addition to having mastered the art of flirtation, they are also notoriously adventurous. So, if you’re looking for someone to jet off at a moment’s notice, call up this air sign that’s down for any roadtrip! No. 12 could be the only choice to represent this chatty, charming air sign. This candle is a refreshing scent for any time, season, or situation. You can bet it will become the fragrance that everyone is talking about. What can I say? It’s irresistible. Just like Gemini
(note to self: Email People Magazine and nominate Gemini for sexiest man of the year?)
Alright. Get your tissues. It’s time to talk about the sweet sign of Cancer. I chose No. 64 for this loving water sign because when you’re with a Cancer, you feel like you’re home. I know that sounds like a cheesy hotel slogan, but here’s the thing… Cancer’s make the most amazing confidants. They always listen to you and have a way of making you feel valued, safe, and calm. Nothing says calm quite like the notes of Lavender in No. 64. It’s like curling up in warm sheets fresh out of the dryer. Or walking into your favorite café after being away for a long time. It’s feeling safety because you feel love. No. 64 also has notes of thyme and patchouli. To me, patchouli is about as raw as scents go. It’s unique and beautiful, but different with every scent it accompanies. Cancer will always match your energy in conversation. Good or bad, they will be there to help you. If you cry, they cry. And if you laugh, they laugh. And if you love, they give it back to you 10-fold.
Well now that we’re done with the mushy stuff… on to the next! And the next is pretty stellar.
Drum roll! Red Carpet! Lights! Camera! Leo! This fire sign is ~literally~ that bi-- oh this is family friendly? Oh okay...my bad. Leo’s are all that. And they don’t need to tell you, because you know the second they walk in. I chose No. 76 because it’s a bold, flashy scent, but at the same time, it’s a crowd pleaser, just like Leo. With notes of sea salt and eucalyptus, No. 76 smells like the first day of summer. Like jumping into a pool for the first time after school lets out. It’s familiar, but rejuvenating. Yes, Leos are bold and they always gravitate toward the spotlight, but they are themselves. Unapologetically. And I can’t think of anything more refreshing than that. Also, the notes of rose and amber in No. 76 highlight Leo’s dominant personality. When this sign figures out which spotlight they have their eye on, they go after it with all they’ve got. They will root their life in chasing their goals. If you’re ever looking for inspiration, look to Leo. They have a growing list of ideas called “How to climb to the top: and look good doing it!”
Are you wearing mom jeans on a regular basis? Are you cleaning for fun? Are you always the “responsible one” in your friend group? Then you might be a Virgo! I chose No. 51 because of its clean, green scent. Virgo’s are cool, earthy moms. While not all Virgos are literal moms, they have tons of maternal energy. The notes of lemon and apple in No. 51 are clean and nostalgic. Like the way the house smelled right before family came to visit. Or the way fresh produce smells at the farmer’s market on Saturday mornings. Virgos are extremely loving, but can be the realest of them all when they need to. If they think you aren’t living your life right, you will hear about it. Did I mention that Beyoncé is a Virgo? Yeah. YEAH. This is where the notes of rose and cedarwood come in to play. Virgo’s have an extremely unique, grounded quality about them. Somehow, they always have a good head on their shoulders and know which way to lead you. And you trust them, because they are your mom friend. The rose and cedarwood are a perfect combo for Virgo. They are strong and soft. Just like moms.
Mirror, Mirror, on the wall… who's the best zodiac sign of all?! Okay, you caught me, I’m a Libra. This sign was the hardest one to narrow down (Hello Classic Libra Stereotype). Ultimately, after much toil and tribulation in typical Libra fashion, I chose No. 83 because this is the candle that cannot decide what it wants to be. This fragrance beautifully blends citrus notes, floral notes, and earthy notes into a perfectly balanced scent. With Libra being the scales of the zodiac, balance is an extremely important aspect of their environment. Libras are obviously excellent mediators. Roommate stealing your food from the fridge? Call up a Libra to help sort it out with justice and ease. To that end, you can always count on a Libra to listen to any of your issues and help you consider all sides of the argument. The amber and patchouli in No. 83 help to ground the fragrance, creating a scent that reminds you of home. Speaking of home, Libra’s house is probably the most stunning place you will ever see. The floral notes in this fragrance highlight how much this adorable air sign values beauty. With talent for curating gorgeous items and a natural love for all things beautiful, you can bet that most of those photos on pinterest were styled by Libras. No. 83 is just like Libra--it can be whatever you want it to be. It will find a way to thrive in any environment and make any space feel like the pinterest-worthy house of your dreams.
Dun Dun DUNNN! Time for Scorpio! Poor Scorpio, they get so much hate sometimes just for a little RBF. I chose No. 68 for Scorpio because it has notes of vetiver and cedarwood for a dark, masculine aroma. This highlights Scorpio’s mysterious energy. What you see is definitely not what you get, but that’s what’s so great about having a Scorpio in your life. If you somehow made the cut, you know they really want you there. I feel like the patchouli in this fragrance softens it a bit. As you get to know Scorpio, and invest your time in their life and their interests, they soften. Even better than that, if you have a Scorpio partner….Dim the lights, baby, cuz this sultry sign is famous for being the most sensuous of the zodiac (for the record, Libra, Leo, and Cap are runner-ups). No. 68 was voted one of the most sexy scents in the library by our chandlers (an unofficial vote, but it still counts). On the flip side, if you screw over a Scorpio, might as well change your name and get outta dodge before they kill you with no mercy.
Aaaaannnddd next up we have the sign most likely to have read the complete works of Mark Twain and ask you to spell “ICUP” because they think it’s funny!!!! Sagittarius!! This one was so easy. No. 61 is undeniably Sagittarius. All together, this fragrance smells like sweet, fluffy cotton candy and perfectly sums up Sag’s personality. Their humor is simple, but their minds are WILD. Notes of Berry, citrus, and vanilla in No. 61 make up that sugary fragrance that perfectly highlights Sag’s outgoing personality and zany humor. If Sag was a place, they’d be those giant candy stores where you get gummies by the pound. When you’re feeling down and out, you should call up your Sagittarius friend to help get you back in the world of fun and laughter. Let’s be real, Willy Wonka was definitely a Sag, right? Alexa, play “pure imagination.” Alternatively, Sagittarius can also be cultured and well-read. That’s where the dewberry and sandalwood work their magic. These interesting and grounding notes really help round out this silly fragrance into something exquisite and unique. There’s definitely more to Sagittarius than meets the eye, and once you get past the “pull my finger” jokes and their massive playlists of Jesse McCartney, you might find that they’re the ace you needed for your trivia team.
If you were having fun before, then I should let you know that the fun is over. It’s time to talk Capricorn. I chose No. 87 for Capricorn because this candle is all business. With the rich notes of coffee in this fragrance, it cuts through any other fragrance with ease. Capricorns are, without a doubt, the most driven, work-focused, responsible sign of the zodiac. #BestRevengeIsYourPaper. They are leaders of the pack and they operate with integrity at the forefront. They will always choose what is right over what is easy. In the same way that they’re serious about work, they will be even more serious in a relationship. The notes of vanilla in this candle soften the fragrance, and sweeten it slightly from the determined coffee scent. Once a Cap gives you their heart, you’ll find their hard exterior melts away to reveal a cuddly teddy bear ready to be your big spoon for life. When you have a Capricorn as a partner, expect to be spoiled with kind, thoughtful gifts that are unique to you. I mean, they have the money from working double overtime.
So, how does one describe an Aquarius? (Btw… Aquarians would like for you to skip this paragraph). I’m pretty sure No. 100 sums it up. Some famous Aquarians include: Abe Lincoln, Ellen DeGeneres, and Harry Styles. Very different people that all have one thing in common: progressive humanitarianism. This is what describes Aquarians. They aren’t afraid to defy the status quo and think freely without considering social norms. No. 100 has notes of green grapes, muguet (which is a fancy name for Lily of the Valley), and vetiver. These three notes together make up the most enchanting, intriguing scent I have ever experienced. That said, it isn’t aggressive. It’s soft and gentle. Aquarians think deeply and are able to express their thoughts in a calm, non-threatening way. This is what sets them apart from other innovative signs like Capricorn and Aries. Ever thought about what it would be like to see a brand new color? I think No. 100 has that same effect. It’s like nothing you’ve ever smelled before. Oftentimes, change is scary and takes bravery and valiance, but No. 100 manages to be new and different without being scary or antagonistic. Don’t get me wrong, Aqua has plenty of bravery, but it’s evenly matched with tenderness. This is what makes an Aquarius (and No. 100) irresistible.
Alright, we saved the best for last… Pisces! You guys, if you don’t have a Pisces in your life, you need to get one. Stat. I picked No. 40 for Pisces because it’s so gentle and soothing. This loving water sign is the queen of compassion. With Pisces’ ruling planet being Neptune, they are often extremely intuitive and wise. The rose and lavender notes in No. 40 represent Pisces’ unmatched empathy for those around them, while the leather notes highlight Pisces’ ability to give enlightened advice to their friends. While they may not be the most outspoken all of the time, they are always thinking of those around them. The scent of No. 40 is light and gorgeous. It makes you feel like you’re in an old house that (if the walls could talk) would have lots of stories to tell. It’s like you can feel all of the beautiful things that have happened within those walls. People falling in love. A college acceptance letter. A couple bringing home their newborn for the first time. Being around a Pisces means never wondering if someone is on your side. If I’m being honest, they also have a lot of cool dad energy (insert photo of Dos Equis guy). They don’t say much, but they don’t need to. A lift of a highball glass and a wink from ol’ Pisces is enough to make you feel valued, loved, and pretty freakin’ cool. And making you feel loved, understood, and supported, is a Pisces’ greatest joy in life.
Well, whether you read this entire post, or just scrolled to the paragraph about you (Leos…), I want to thank you for diving into the world of astrology with me today. Astrology, while not for everyone, is a fun tool to learn some more about certain behaviors you have and aspects of your personality. Part of the reason I love astrology is because it has an element of whimsy and magic. Here at Candlefish, we believe in the magic of individuality. The magic of inspiration. The magic of becoming the champion of your own story. And the magic of the perfect fragrance being a part of all the times in your life worth remembering. Whether it’s a cozy day at home watching the rain, or the day you say “I do” to someone you love. I hope this fun little post inspires you to embrace every part of yourself. The good, the bad, and the Scorpio. HA! Had to throw one more in there…
I want to end by saying, these 12 scents I’ve chosen were really hard to narrow down from the 100 that Candlefish offers. Check out the full website for some more awesome candles and candle accessories. Again, if you don’t feel that connected to the description of your sun sign, calculate your whole chart and read the entries about your moon and rising/ascendant signs! I bet one of those will resonate with you.
Cheers,
McKenzie
