Here's what the sisters behind BR Design Co had to say:
BR Design Co is a collaboration of sisters Cassandra Browner Richardson and Carlene Browner. Prior to combining our brands in 2007 we each created jewelry under our own individual brands.
Our best creative advice is to create what feels like you. You have to create in a comfort zone. It has to feel real to you or it will be short lived. We have been making clay jewelry since we were young girls with our Mom Queenie. Carlene and I are actually very different creatively. I have connections to neutrals and she has a love of colors. We think it has a lot to do with our chosen professions. I am a Registered Nurse and Carlene is a first grade teacher. I like the actual process of making the jewelry and she prefers the aesthetic of the finished product. Luckily this works perfectly for our business.
It sounds cliche but we are literally inspired by everything. Carlene loves fashion magazines and runway looks. Anything fashion related actually. I am mostly drawn to architecture and home design publications. Carlene will take a photo of a person wearing a beautiful sweater and I will take a photo of an interesting door or window. I also spend a lot of time collecting paint chips from Lowes. Many of our textured pieces are inspired by nature scenes of trees, flowers, shrubs, etc.
We are known best for simple shapes with lots of color. We both suck at business paperwork and anything computer related.
Our guiding principle is “Never take shortcuts”. We started making clay jewelry over 40 years ago with our Mom and over the years we have had times when we made lots of jewelry and times where we only made pieces for ourselves but through all of those times we always did the best job we could do. Each piece was made with care and just like our Mom taught us.
Our brand is best known for simple shapes but with lots of color. We always display every color on the color wheel because just like we have a favorite color we appreciate that so does everyone else. When a customer walks up to our market booth they will always have a choice of all the primary and secondary colors. We actually have a chart posted to make sure they are all represented.
We are so inspired by the local maker scene here in Charleston, SC and are so proud of the talent this town holds! One such artist is local paper and gifts designer Emily Kirby of Texture Design Co. You can find Emily's prints in our Charleston shop, and hopefully you snagged a spot in her Maker Break workshop tomorrow night at Candlefish Charleston!
We sat down with Emily to chat about her inspiration, creative advice, and what's ahead for her company. Here is what Emily had to say:

We are candle people. We love and care about our homes, our personal space, and making our environment feel just right. That's why we were so excited to sit down with Hilah Stahl, co-founder and CEO of Spoak, to chat about scenting and styling our homes for Spring.
Hilah and her company Spoak help figure out what your space needs and then finds it for you. Think rugs, wall art, and of course, candles. The Spoak team also happens to be big Candlefish fans! Candles are a decor item they love to incorporate when styling client projects, and Hilah has some great advice that you can incorporate in your own space. Read on and see what she has to share!
I’m the co-founder and CEO of Spoak, an online service that helps people find the finishing touches for their home decor from artisans and small businesses around the world. Think wall art, rugs, lighting, and all those other decorative details that are so hard to land on.
At Spoak we talk a lot about “Double Duty Decor” pieces (products that are both decorative and serve some other purpose) because most of our clients are decorating pretty small spaces. To me, candles are the ultimate Double Duty Decor piece. They smell delicious, they can often have some personal meaning, and on any given surface, they can be the sculptural, tall, or short styling element.
Because of that, I think the sky’s the limit when it comes to styling them. I think you can put them anywhere -- on an open shelf in the dining room, in an empty fireplace, or in a cluster at the bottom of a staircase. That said, my go-tos are to place them atop a stack of coffee table books next to another small sculptural item, or on a tray with a little bowl or stack of matches from my favorite bars and restaurants.
Oh boy. I am the wrong person to ask. I keep a pretty large candle collection, all varying in shape, style, and color, and when I’m shuffling around my decor and need that final touch to balance it out, I’m always pretty certain I’ve got something in my candle cupboard that will work.
I think candles make the biggest difference in the bathroom and the bedroom, but I also never leave a coffee table without a candle on it!
Our philosophy at Spoak is that the accessories are really what brings the character to your space, and that especially holds true when it comes to seasonal decorating. I love to switch out my wintry pillows for lighter and brighter ones, swap my candles from the more fir and vanilla scents to florals (groundbreaking, I know!), and switch out the greenery in all the vases to flowers. I’m a big sucker for tulips.
We hope you enjoyed these pro styling tips! What ways do you like to style your space with scent and decor for Spring? We'd love to hear all about it in the comments below!

It’s our goal here at Candlefish to provide a memorable, fun, and “nose-opening” experience for every single candle lovin’ customer. Part of enjoying the experience is making you feel right at home exploring our Library of candles so you can discover your favorite scents with ease. Read on for our top 5 favorite things to reveal about the Library, and feel like a pro next time you are browsing the options.
Yes, you read that right! First and foremost, the Library features 100 candle fragrances, all unique to Candlefish. Instead of naming each fragrance based on it’s scent notes, we give each candle a number (#1–100), then stamp said number on the label. This helps you better identify the fragrances you like based solely on how it smells, instead of being steered away because of something you read. You know the old phrase “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover”? Well we think that applies to candles, too!
Curious what you are smelling? Ask a chandler, browse through the leather-bound Library book, or browse online by candle number or fragrance family.
We agree, 100 candles is a lot of options! How do you keep track? With a library card, that’s how! The first time you visit the library, be sure to start a library card. This will help you keep track of the candle numbers you like and don’t like as you browse. We suggest circling the number you like, and marking an X over the numbers you don’t. A chandler can then decipher your card, suggest similar options, and also file your card at the Library for next time. Ain’t that just peachy?

Another helpful tip is how to use the “cloche” that tops each of our candles on display. Also called a “bell jar”, this handy dome shaped glass cover is not only a great way to keep dust away, it also captures the candle’s fragrance and provides a great way to test out the candle’s scent. You can of course smell the top of the candle while browsing, but smelling the inside of the cloche better represents how the candle will smell while it’s burning. And you also look super official using it, bonus!
As you can imagine, picking the options for the Library 100 was no easy task. There are thousands upon thousands of fragrance options out there, so to be sure we were offering the best variety, we chose nine fragrance “families” and created 9–10 options for each in candle form. This way the Library has a perfect variety of all the types of fragrances you love. Think citrus, woodsy, water fresh, floral, and more. Check them all out on our fragrance family page.
All 100 Library fragrances are offered in two sizes, each hand poured in-store in the workshop:
9 oz. jar
2.5 oz. travel tin
Ready to take one home? Ask a chandler, and we’ll set you right up with the candle you are looking for.
Can’t decide on a fragrance? The 2.5 oz. travel tin is not only great for giving, it’s also an excellent way to test out a few fragrances when you just can’t pick one. See those drawers in front of the Library cart? Those are filled with tins! Yahoo!
We hope these tips have made you feel closer to that expert chandler status you’ve been aiming for. Now come see us in the shop and show off your new skills!

If you buy candles, this post is for you! Whether you are a total candle connoisseur or just beginning your candle collection, we want you to get the most out of your candle purchase. These common candle tools not only extend the life of your candles, they can improve the fragrance and overall burn performance, too. Read on to learn how to use each one, and discover the benefits they provide to your candle burning experience.
Trim your wicks, people!
THE FACTS: The ideal wick length is ¼ - ½ inch, and trimming the wick to that length at purchase and beyond is always recommended. A wick that is too long will cause excess smoke and sooting, plus excess wick debris to collect at the top of the wick, not fun and not safe. An untrimmed can also cause the candle to burn too hot, which can affect the fragrance and cause your candle to burn up faster than necessary.
THE CANDLE TOOL: Wick Trimmers. Trimming the wick is easy enough when your candle is new, but that gets tricky when the candle has been burned a few times. Enter wick trimmers. The long handle of this popular candle accessory allows you to easily reach the wick at the bottom of the candles, and the cleverly designed trimmers not only clip the burned wick debris, they collect it for easy retrieval. Awkward scissor wick trimming, be gone!
New tool on the block!
THE FACTS: Candles smell great, but that smoke after you blow them out...not so great. Blowing out candles without any tool can cause excess smoke, a strong burnt aroma, plus can cause hot wax to blow out of the vessel and onto your wall or candle surface.
THE CANDLE TOOL: Wick Dippers. This simply brilliant and easy to use tool provides a smoke-free, cleaner option for extinguishing your candles. Simply dip the lit wick into the melted wax pool, and voila! The flame is extinguished without the hassle of smoke and rogue candle debris.
Keepin’ it Classy.
THE FACTS: If wick dippers are the newest candle tool to hit the shelves, candle snuffers are the OG of candle tools. Wick dippers are great for your container candles, but snuffers allow you to extinguish taller candles such as tapers and pillars, while eliminating the chance of blowing hot wax all over the place.
THE CANDLE TOOL: Candle snuffers have been used for centuries for extinguishing candle flames. The cone shaped top keeps air away from the flame which causes it to extinguish. Candle snuffers can be used for all types of candles: scented container candles, tapers, and pillars. We recommend snuffers that “dangle” so that you can extinguish from any angle.
Safety first, kids.
THE FACTS: There are countless tools you can use to light your candle, but safety matches are our fav. But what ARE safety matches? A box of safety matches contains specifically designed matches that only ignite when struck on the side of the matchbox, making them inherently safer than strike anywhere matches or matchbooks which house the striker in contact with the matches.
THE CANDLE TOOL: Safety Matches. Beyond providing a safer match to keep in your home, our safety matches are often at least 4” long, making it easier to light candles that have burned down a few inches into the candle vessel.
